This famous arena sits on a vast piece of land that has been used with recreational intent for many years before its conception. The land we are referring to is actually part of Australia’s National Tennis Centre, which is located at Melbourne Park, Victoria, Australia. Rod Laver Arena replaced its predecessor, Kooyong Stadium, as the main venue for the Australian Open in 1988.
The arena got its present name after it underwent a name change, from Centre Court to Rod Laver Arena. The name change was implemented simply to honour Rod Laver, who is an international sensation as a world renowned tennis player as well as his winning streak in the Australian Open.
