Rod Laver Arena replaced its predecessor, Kooyong Stadium, as the main venue for the Australian Open in 1988.

The arena got its present name after it underwent a name change, from Centre Court to Rod Laver Arena. The name change was implemented simply to honour Rod Laver, who is an international sensation as a world renowned tennis player as well as his winning streak in the Australian Open.
