Princess Theatre

A spectacular landmark that you wouldn't want to miss!

The theatre dates back as far as 1854, which was then purchased by Marriner Theatres in 1986. The acquisition came with plans to totally refurbish it to ensure its future placement as a leading live theatre landmark. Three years after its purchase, the refurbishment was finally completed in 1989. Of course, it reopened its doors to the public with an impressive schedule that set a new record for organizing the longest-running show in Victoria. That show was the one and only 'The Phantom Of The Opera'.

Friendly ghost sighting

Finally, here is something for individuals who love to indulge in supernatural sightings or happenings. The theatre has been reported to experience sightings of a friendly ghost, and that ghost was formerly known as Frederick Federici who took on the role of Mephistopheles in Faust, an opera by Gounod. His passing unfortunately occurred just after he finished playing his role – he never managed to return to the main stage to take his bows. However, the production crew reported the opposite as they claimed he was with them the whole time. Today, a seat (third row in a dress circle) is always left empty to honour him. If his presence is sighted on the night of a performance, it is believed to bring good luck to the night's event.
