Comedy Theatre

History and location of Comedy Theatre

Comedy Theatre is currently owned by Marriner Theatre and was built in 1928. It has approximately 997 seats, which is a pretty impressive number for a theatre that has been built so long ago. The theatre is built with Spanish influence that uses wrought-iron for its balconies and Florentine-style aesthetics for its exterior. The theatre is located just diagonally opposite 'Her Majesty's Theatre' at 240 Exhibition Street. Comedy Theatre was erected on a site that once housed the old 'Iron Pot', one of Melbourne's earliest play-houses by George Selth Coppin. It was built in 1885 but got abandoned more than 3 decades later.
