History of Hanging Rock
Hanging Rock's official title is Mount Diogenes and it was bestowed upon it by Robert Hoddle in 1884 as part of many other Macedonian names given to the area's unique features, others include Mount Macedon, Mount Alexander and the Campaspe River.
The Rock has several distinctive formations including the boulder itself which is suspended other boulders which forms the main entrance called the Colonnade , the Eagle and the UFO.
Hanging Rock is located in the Wurundjeri nations territory, it was formerly a site for male initiation and as such entrance was forbidden except for young males being taken there for ceremonial reasons.
Hanging Rock is the centre of the Hanging Rock Recreation Reserve which includes a horse racing track, picnic areas, creeks, a historical centre and a cafe.
