Daylesford Area

Nestled on the edge of the Wombat State Forest is to be found Daylesford, there gold mining town with a difference. The 1850’s Australian Gold Rush brought many Swiss and Italian immigrants to the area, not just for the gold but also the abundance of water.

Together with its twin town of Hepburn Springs, Daylesford is the spa capital of Australia. All around the area are mineral springs complete with hand pumps showing evidence of why it was a much sought after area to settle.

The are also many wellness retreats specialising in spa treatments, and the superbly situated and state-of-the-art Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa has welcomed visitors since 1895. Walking Peace Mile is a designated trail around Lake Daylesford, is considered a daily constitutional by the residents, and the many award-winning restaurants serve creatively prepared local produce.

Located on the lake’s water’s edge, the elegant Lake House is the state’s most celebrated country house.


Daylesford is only 75km from Bendigo and takes just over an hour by coach and is one of Victoria’s favourite weekend destinations.

The commercial centre of Daylesford is located along Albert and Vincent Street. There are plenty of historical buildings including the Town Hall and several period hotels and shops.

Many of the streets and avenues are lined with deciduous trees that erupt into a blaze of colour during the Autumn.

Lake Daylesford

In the 1890’s the idea of creating a lake close to Daylesford was on the planning table several times, but Lake Daylesford did not actually get built until 1929 and was officially opened in 1930.

Since then the lake has become a main attraction for all tourists visiting Victoria and regularly used by locals. It has become a haven for local bird life, a place for everyone of all ages to relax, perhaps enjoy a picnic and then take a scenic walk to enjoy the glorious scenery and views it provides.

Hepburn Springs

Hepburn Springs is situated slap bang in the middle of Australia’s largest concentration of mineral spring, which a full of health-giving minerals.

Hepburn Springs and Hepburn are twin towns which are often badged together under the Hepburn Springs banner. Hepburn Springs was originally known as Spring Creek and Hepburn as the Old Racecourse which is the location of the recreation reserve.

Today the village is known as a tourist destination spa town where visitors can sample the local mineral waters, there are massage retreats, three cafes, six restaurants, four food takeaways, two pubs, three bars, shops and galleries.
