Castlemaine is just under 40km south of Bendigo and is a charming place with roughly 8,000 residents. It is a perfect location for a day trip, to explore the charming Georgian style buildings of this old gold mining town.

Victorian Goldfields Railway
The Victorian Goldfields Railway offers steam travel of yesteryear. It is an authentic steam heritage train linking the historic gold mining towns of Castlemaine and Maldon in Central Victoria. To enjoy a good day out, the 11:45 from Castlemaine gives you 2 hours to have lunch in one of the cafes or pubs and explore the enchanting little goldfields town of Maldon before returning to Castlemaine in the late afternoon.
The Victorian Goldfields Railway offers the opportunity to drive one of their heritage Steam or Diesel Locomotives whilst being in charge of a Goods train.
Castlemaine is certainly worth a day trip when staying in Bendigo, it has a charm of its own and offers wonderful scenery, cuisine, wine and hospitality.
